We’re delighted to announce a wonderfully exciting project!
Applications are now open for a fully funded PhD position at Northumbria University in collaboration with the Carl Rosa Trust. The studentship, which is funded by the Northern Bridge Consortium under the Collaborative Doctoral Awards scheme, will focus on the history of British touring opera using the Carl Rosa Opera Company (1873-1960) as a case study. The student will work with materials from the Carl Rosa collection at Liverpool Central Library, which includes autograph and manuscript scores, orchestral parts, music editions, production notes, set designs, librettos and business records from the 1820s to the 1960s. They will be supervised by a cross-institutional supervisory team including Francesca Vella (Northumbria), Katherine Hambridge (Durham), Jo Robinson (Newcastle) and Valerie Langfield (Carl Rosa).
The full project description and the candidate specification is here (under ‘Projects recruiting for entry in…’ – scroll right to the end): https://northernbridge.ac.uk/applyforastudentship/cda/
The closing date for applications is 14 February 2025. The PhD start date is October 2025 (no deferrals are possible).
For more information on this position or to discuss your ideas for the project before applying, please contact the lead supervisor, Francesca Vella (francesca.vella -at- northumbria.ac.uk).
This is an incredibly exciting project! The Collection has so much extraordinary material, some dating from nearly 200 years ago, and we are extremely keen for it to be better known, accessed and developed. You can follow the links within the URL above, or contact us directly, on valerie.langfield@carlrosatrust.org.uk.
Could you be one of our trustees?! The Carl Rosa Tust is seeking two new trustees to join the team. We meet four times a year in Liverpool (where the archive is looked after by Liverpool Record Archives) and/or remotely, and we are looking for people who have an enjoyment and knowledge of opera, and/or British theatre history, and want to be part of our small organisation. Help us make the Trust’s work and the archive more widely known!
You don’t need to be an expert – if you are willing to get stuck in with whatever needs doing, especially with fundraising, administration and education (and it’d help if you’re within reach of Liverpool), we’d love to hear from you!
Please email Valerie Langfield on valerie.langfield@carlrosatrust.org.uk
